The remarks are Türkiye’s strongest warning against Syrian Democratic Forces led by the Pentagon’s Allied Kurds. Fidan indirectly accused the Syrian Democratic Forces and the People’s Defense Units of trying to disintegrate Syria, saying that the group was mobilizing in recent unrest in southern Syria, especially sectarian clashes in Swida, which left more than a thousand dead.
He also criticized Israel for their unwillingness to see a strong and stable Syria, though a Turkish diplomatic source later emphasized that Fidan’s warning was merely a Syrian groups!
Turkey considers the People’s Defense Units armed with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which has been armed for Kurdish autonomy in Turkey since 2008 and declared dissolution in May, a threat to its national security. The dissolution is part of the current peace talks between the Turkish government and Abdullah Ocalan, the PKK prisoner leader. Fidan emphasized that any attempt to analyze violence is a direct threat to Türkiye’s national security and Ankara would intervene.
Fidan’s warning, just days after Tom Barack, US envoy to Syria, with Mazloml Kobani, commander -in -chief of the Kurdish Democratic Niser, shows increasing pressure on the Kurdish -led group in line with US and Turkish efforts to fully integrate them into the Syrian government.
Fidan said, “Whatever your wishes you have, except for the breakup”, which apparently referred to the current talks with Washington’s mediation between Damascus and the Kurdish democratic forces.
The Syrian Democratic Forces have been the main Pentagon’s main ally in the fight against ISIL in Syria, but about four US forces stationed to fight ISIL as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to withdraw Washington from foreign military clashes.
Türkiye carried out a set of military operations in the areas controlled by Syrian Democratic Forces in northern Syria between the ages of 1 and 2, and it has been pressured by Washington for years to cut its partnership with the group.
Last December, after the fall of the Syrian government and Turkish -backed Turkish government in Damascus, Ankara reduced its threats to military intervention to support the new government’s efforts to consolidate the situation in the country.
Syrian democratic forces control about one -third of Syrian territory under autonomous management in the northeast of the country. It is clear that Ankara considers the Syrian democratic forces in northern Syria a threat to the peace process with the PKK inside Türkiye.
